Hospice of the Chesapeake is excited to announce two new physicians have joined the not-for-profit’s medical team this month. Dr. Sonja Richmond is Vice President of Medical Affairs and Hospice Medical Director and Dr. Ever Ponciano is a hospice physician.

Based out of the Charles County location in Waldorf, Maryland, Richmond will oversee the organization’s hospice medical team in all four of the counties it serves including its two inpatient care centers. She joins the hospice after many years with Vitas Healthcare in Washington, D.C., as hospice medical director and is board certified in internal medicine as well as a hospice medical director. She has a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Virginia and completed her medical degree and residency at George Washington University. Richmond has a passion for wellness and mindfulness and has also spent the last 15 years building up her expertise in the practice and teaching of yoga. She has an Ayurveda certification and is currently working toward her Yin Yoga certification.

Ponciano has worked as a contracted physician with Hospice of the Chesapeake for the last few years and now has joined the organization as a team member, providing care to patients in the Hussman Supportive Care Center and the Rebecca Fortney Inpatient Care Center. He previously served as the Associate Medical Director at Hospice of Washington County and continues to provide care to the community in private practice. He has two undergraduate degrees from the University of Maryland and completed his medical degree at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Marny Fetzer said both physicians fit in well with the vision of the organization, which serves Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles and Prince George’s counties. “As Maryland’s largest independent not-for-profit hospice organization, we take our role of providing expert, compassionate care to all who need it very seriously. Dr. Richmond and Dr. Ponciano join us in our mission to break down barriers to bring hope and healing to those experiencing advanced, serious illness,” Fetzer said.
